ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Benjamin “Jamie” Heller worked in Community Mental Health for more than forty years, including serving as head of a Psychiatric Emergency Team. For many years, he also ran programs for children and teens that tapped into their creativity and imagination to create “Healing Stories.”During those years, he came to appreciate both the resilience of people facing extraordinary circumstances and the power of a good story to help us make sense of a sometimes bewildering world.A lifelong fan of mystery and adventure, he has a particular fondness for the colorful pulp magazines of the 1930s and ’40s, with their larger-than-life characters, fast-moving plots, and sense of danger and discovery. His other interests include history, folklore, and the strange corners of the past where fact and legend have a habit of running into one another. Those varied influences find their way into his fiction. Whether writing gritty crime stories drawn from the unpredictable world of Community Mental Health or fantasy adventures steeped in folklore, history, and the supernatural, he writes about ordinary people suddenly confronted by extraordinary circumstances—and what they discover about themselves when the familiar rules no longer seem to apply.
